NBAA Survey Aims to Gauge Members’ Opinions on Proposed Rules for Safe Use of Drones
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) is asking members to take a survey on any concerns they may have regarding the use of drones ,and the FAA’s recently issued notice of proposed rulemaking covering Part 108 beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
The survey, which is open through Sept. 15, will help inform NBAA’s comments to the rule, said Heidi Williams, NBAA vice president, air traffic services and infrastructure. Industry comments on the proposed rule are due by Oct. 6.
“It’s helpful to understand if members are using drones as a tool or if they have concerns with the proposed rule and drone operations,” she said. “Understanding the use and operational impacts will help form the basis of NBAA’s comments to the FAA on the proposed Part 108 rule.”
Drone use for commercial operations has been heavily restricted, Williams noted.
“Commercial operations have been limited to either line-of-sight, or you’re operating under exemptions or waivers,” she said. “(The proposed rule) opens the door to having routine and scalable operations, so we need to make sure it’s done right.”
The NPRM includes operating rules for UAS package delivery, agriculture, surveying, public safety and flight testing for compensation or hire.
